I THIRST

I THIRST (a Homeless Encounter)

In 2022 a handful of parishioners started I THIRST, which is a homeless encounter ministry. This ministry seeks to evangelize and feed the homeless on the streets of downtown Grand Rapids. Currently once a month we make 170+ healthy sack lunches to distribute individuals at Heartside park and on the streets where the at-risk population gather. We distribute prayer cards and Miraculous medals and pray with and for those we meet. Our ministry is growing with volunteers and opportunities, and we would like to thank our parishioners for being so generous with your prayers, time and financial support. We could not be growing and being the hands and feet of Christ.

Currently we are not taking donations for used clothing. We learned it is impossible to do all things and be all things to everyone and, do it well. For example, it is hard to have so many different size coats/boots/underwear/sweatpants, etc. in the trunks of our cars. Therefore, we are focusing on what we can do well, which is nourish the body and soul. When we do encounter someone in need of a coat for example, we will not turn them away empty handed. Instead, we are directing these patrons to the resources that already exist downtown like DeGage and Mel Trotter and we provide them with a voucher so they can obtain these items at no cost. We will continue to carry one-size-fits- all items like blankets, socks, hats, gloves, t-shirts and we do several collections for these items throughout the year through the Mission Corner in the Narthex. Be sure to watch the Mission Corner and bulletin for more info.

A few good places for parishioners to donate used clothing include:

  • In The Image (things are free for patrons) and they are at a new location of 4255 Kalamazoo Avenue SE Grand Rapids, MI 49508
  • Degage at 139 Sheldon SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503
  • The KofC drop box in our Holy Family parking lot near the barn

Again, we continue to be in awe at the generosity of our parishioners. If you would like to learn more about our ministry, please click here or grab a flyer located on the ministry cart.
