Kindergarten through 6th Grade Faith Formation

In our discipleship classes, our goal is to not just to educate the minds of our young people but to truly set their hearts ablaze through the Holy Spirit. Together, we seek to educate the mind, the heart, and the spirit in developmentally appropriate ways that facilitate an encounter with God and plant seeds for lifelong discipleship.

 

Classes begin October 4 - There are two options for class times that families can choose which night works best for them. Classes will be held on

  • Sundays from 4 - 5:30pm 
  • Mondays from 5 - 6:30pm

Kindergarten:  Kindergarten students must be registered to attend Kindergarten in Fall 2026 to be eligible for elementary classes.


First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion Preparation Program

Holy Family is pleased to welcome all first and second graders to their first and frequent reception of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Our First Holy Communion Preparation Program consists of regular catechetical classes and several special events that lead up to the First Holy Communion Mass.


The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament of initiation where we physically receive Jesus in the entirety of His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. For First Communion, children must be baptized, be at least 7 years of age, and have completed direct preparation with the Parish.

 

"The sacraments of Christian initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist — lay the foundations of every Christian life. The sharing in the divine nature given to men through the grace of Christ bears a certain likeness to the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life. The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the Sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity." — CCC 1212

 

Please note that beginning Fall of 2026, for all children in first grade or younger, two years of preparation are required before receiving Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. For your child to receive these two sacraments at the traditional time of second grade, he/she must attend Religious Formation classes starting in the Fall of first grade. This is so that we are best preparing all children for these beautiful sacraments. Note: current students enrolled in second grade as of September, 2026 will receive all sacramental prep during 2nd grade.

How Can I as a Parent Best Support My Child’s Preparation for First Holy Communion?

While our teachers do a wonderful job of explaining the sacraments and showing our young people how to receive them, it is truly your example that will have the greatest impact on the spiritual life of your child. If you are not already doing so, we invite you to make these things a priority:

  • Attending Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.
  • Making your own faith a priority by seeking the opportunities for adult faith formation in the Parish.
  • Supporting a parish ministry with the gift of your time and talents.
  • Having regular family prayer time which includes discussing the Eucharist with your child.
  • Returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, especially if it’s been a while.

While we have an excellent team of catechists who, along with our priest who will be journeying with our students, the best and truest example of faith comes from their parents.

  1. October 18 parent meeting 5:45pm
  2. Nov 15 or 16 parent meeting during class
  3. Dec 5 Reconciliation Retreat 9am-12pm
  4. Jan 24 or 25 parent/student meeting
  5. Feb 6 Retreat 1 - 6pm
  6. April 24 Rehearsal 9am - 1pm
  7. May 2 First Communion Mass 11am
  8. 85% discipleship attendance
  9. Attendance of all retreats

Discipleship for Children with Special Needs

We would like to help provide Discipleship opportunities for all of our Parish children in the way that best suits the child’s formational needs. We can offer to support children with special learning, behavioral, emotional or physical needs in a number of ways, depending on the level or type of need. If a child would benefit more from an alternative Discipleship program (perhaps small group or special friend) rather than our mainstreamed classroom format, we will do our best to work with parent(s) in providing the appropriate formation.
