Holy Family Adopts a Hurricane Family
Caledonia Cares – Katrina Relief is a community organization formed from a group of caring individuals from our Caledonia School district, churches and local businesses, to reach out and help some of the victims of the Gulf Coast Hurricanes. This group went to Louisiana and interviewed (one on one) 18 families who they hope will be adopted by the Caledonia Community.
Through our efforts to enhance Holy Family’s Outreach Ministry, the Stewardship Council is recommending we adopt one of the families affected by Hurricane Katrina. After careful consideration through information we have received from the Caledonia Cares group, and with support from our Leadership Councils, Holy Family has decided to adopt a family who lives in one the Hurricane ravaged towns of Louisiana.
The Jan Hamer Pinero Family is our adopted Family. Jan is a teacher with four boys, three living at home (Rory 19, is a freshman in college, Blaise 14, Connor 9, Duncan 6˝). They lost their home and most of it contents and are staying with Jan’s parents right now.
To take care of Jan and her family’s immediate needs we will be placing Starfish on the Giving Tree in the Narthex. The victims of these areas prefer gift cards rather than the actual items needed. They want to be able to spend the money in their communities to begin to build back up their local businesses. The only store open right now is Wal-Mart. Jan also expressed a need for Shell Gas Cards. She also asked for lots of “prayers, prayers, prayers.” She is not comfortable asking for assistance as she feels there are many more who are worse off than her family.
Our commitment as a parish is not only financial. We will eventually be asking for volunteers to go down to help Jan and her family rebuild. This is not possible right now however as there is still so much trash and other debris left over that no one is able to begin the rebuilding process.
We have a wall in the Narthex dedicated to sharing information about the Pinero family. It includes a picture of Jan and her family, updates on their needs, her address if you wish to write her and the boys, and other information.
As a sponsorship parish we must make a commitment to provide support for as long as it takes to restore the Pinero Family to a fully functioning state. This is estimated to take up to 2 years. Please see the back of this stuffer explaining sponsorship guidelines as a Caledonia Cares – Katrina Relief sponsor.
Now is the time friend, to reach out as we do so well here at Holy Family and show Jan, Rory, Blaise, Connor and Duncan the love and support they so desperately need!
